The Yorkshire Ripper

JEAN CLAY

This murder is reminiscent of the murder of Margo Walls four months before. After the furore over the Hill murder only three weeks earlier the police had to bury this one quickly. It was done close to police headquarters in Dewsbury from which the hunt for the Ripper was directed. Chief Superintendent Gilrain was handed this hot potato but they quickly discounted the Ripper. First it was a murder hunt, then a man was questioned about it and finally they said she was hit by a train. They had much to hide. I wonder if that man was Peter Sutcliffe, the man who could not be arrested, the man who had three weeks before murdered Jacqueline Hill, and who would shortly attempt to stage his arrest in Sheffield because the West Yorkshire police had decided not to arrest him for his crimes for tactical reasons.
I believe Sutcliffe committed more assaults and murders in this period when, as he admitted himself he was completely out of touch with reality. Some of these may be in the London area when he was badgering Mr Sickert, the Victorian Ripper expert. One murder of a prostitute in the Savoy hotel comes to mind. It had his M.O. stamped on it.
